Canada / Alaska Trip 2026

Alaska State Fair and Heading South

We woke up in Homer to a beautiful sunrise and hit the road without a set destination, except to head towards home over the next few weeks.

Up until this point we've had a pretty well defined set of destinations and reservations at more popular locations like the Canadian National Parks and Homer.


However, we had decided to leave things more open ended for the trip home.....that's how we ended up in Palmer at the one remaining campsite in a big field at the Alaska State Fair for a couple of nights! We spent the day doing all the fair things and eating all the fair food.


Over the next few days we'll be backtracking down the Alcan highway until we get the the Stewart Cassier Highway which will take us further west as we continue to head south.

This also means a a few long driving days. Today we drove back over the worst sections of the Alcan so we go pretty slowly. Below is a small video clip of the road conditions.

We drove about 10 hours today. We're staying at an RV Park in Whitehorse tonight which is the capital of the Yukon province.


 
 
 

Homer and Halfway!

We arrived in Homer Alaska on 8/15. This is the midpoint of our trip and we'll start heading towards home after this. We stayed the first couple days at Ocean Shores RV Park which is on the bluff overlooking Kechamak Bay and the Cook Inlet. It had easy beach access and sweeping views. Look for the horseback riders in the middle of the photo!


We rode our bikes around town and stocked up on some groceries. While we were shopping we saw Atz Kilcher doing his shopping too. He's is a local celebrity from a homesteading reality show we had watched for several years, Alaska: The Last Frontier

We had always thought that the show took place deep in the wilds of Alaska with none of the modern comforts, like electricity. Apparently the homestead is a few miles outside of Homer.


We moved to Heritage RV Park on the Homer Spit for our last 3 days. The Spit is a 4.5 mile narrow finger of land that extends into Kachemak Bay and is home to the other side of Homer. Fun fact: the Homer Spit considered the longest road built into ocean waters.

You can see it from this picture we took from the aptly named Skyline Drive above Homer.


It has a big harbor area where many charter fishing companies are based along with shops and restaurants. There are also beaches on both sides of the spit.

Seward and Petersen Lake

From our campground in the Portage Valley area we drove south to the coastal town of Seward. It's another beautiful coastal town located on Resuurection Bay. It's surrounded by a mix of snow capped and tree covered mountains .

Our campground was right on the waterfront and and easy walk to town. Cruise ships stop here frequently and there were several on the 2 days we stayed. Fun Fact: Seward was the historic starting point for the 2300 mile Iditarod sled dog race but later moved to Anchorage. We stopped to check out at the monument.

We also went to the Alaska Sealife Center which houses an aquarium, research facility and marine mammal / rescue center. I had really wanted to see puffins and they had several along with seals, sea lions and many other sea birds.



We booked a last minute wildlife cruise around Resurrection Bay and the Kenai Fjords National Park which is mostly accessible only by boat. We saw puffins in the wild (!), bald eagles, seals, otters, sea lions.


This morning we left and started making our way down the Kenai Peninsula towards Homer where we’ll stay for 5 days. We found a great free camp spot at the edge of Petersen Lake and took the kayak out with Pepper at the helm. She seems to love the kayak which always surprises us because she's not a fan of swimming.
