We left Lake Louise yesterday morning (7/29/26) and drove the Icefields Parkway to Jasper. It's considered one of the most scenic drives in the world and we had great weather for it. It was about a 4-5 hour drive as we made a few stops along the way

First stop was Peyto Lake.

Yes, It really is that color! Fun Fact of the day:  As the nearby glacier moves, it grinds solid rock into a very fine dust. This is called rock flour. Melting ice carries this dust into the water, where tiny particles float and reflect bright blue and green light.

About 20 miles outside the town of Jasper we started seeing the impacts of the massive fire that happened two years ago in July. We saw miles of burned trees all the way to our campground. The fire was about 80,000 acres and it really put the scale of that into perspective for us. About 1/3 of the buildings in Jasper burned. There is a huge amount of rebuilding happening everywhere you look but the town of Jasper is still very busy with lots of shops, restaurants and tourists.

Most of the trees in our campground were burned as you can see in the photo above. On our bike ride today t was a little eerie to see all the skeletal burned trees along the trails but all the new growth on the ground.

Tomorrow we start a few days of long drives north as we make our way to the Alcan highway towards Alaska.
